More on phlebotomy training
Phlebotomy involves drawing out blood from the body of a patient by making an incision. A few years back this task was performed by the doctors. However, with the advancement of technology and the healthcare solutions, the responsibilities of the doctors are becoming more focused towards diagnosing the problems and finding the reasons and the solution to the malfunctioning of the body organs. A trained phlebotomist is a key member in the team of the professionals. These highly skilled professionals can assist the doctors in conducting tests, help out the medical assistants with the equipment and also work as the nurses if the nature of the job demands it. This is the reason the hospitals and other medical facilities are more interested in hiring the trained phlebotomists. The phlebotomists deal with;
- Collection blood from the veins or arteries of the patients
- Testing of the blood samples
- Transfusion of blood
- Researching on the blood samples they collect
- Verification of the patient identity
- Labeling of blood samples
- Storing of blood samples
- Conducting interviews with the patients etc.
The existing untrained phlebotomists or those students who want to pursue their careers as the trained phlebotomists can opt for two options. Either they can become certified phlebotomists or they can complete their associate degree in the same field. The training under both these programs improvises the knowledge of the phlebotomists related to;
- Human anatomy
- Patient care
- Bedside manners
- Various blood drawing techniques
- First aid
- Needle technique
- Creating patient’s report
- Handling containers of hazardous waste
- Dermal puncture devices
- Blood culture bottles
- Handling medical equipment etc.
The phlebotomy training requires a period of eighteen to twenty four months to complete and offers a chance to the students and existing professionals to hone their skills through on hands training experience. Once the training is completed the students will be required to take an exam.
